Cabinet okays border fencing in CCpur

Construction of border fence along a 27-Km-long section of the India-Myanmar border in Churachandpur sector is set to commence.
A Cabinet meeting held on May 7, 2026 with Chief Minister Y Khemchand in the chair gave the nod to construction of border fence in the border areas of Churachandpur district.
The India-Myanmar border in Churachandpur district runs from border pillar number 43 to border pillar number 47 and it is 27 Kms long.
Sources said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken up necessary steps for commencement of border fencing along the 27 Kms long India-Myanmar border in Churachandpur district.
It is estimated that the total area which would be affected by fencing along the 27 Kms long section would be a little more than 80 hectares.
The work of constructing a border fence along India-Myanmar border in Churachandpur district was pending since November 2025 .
The new Government headed by Chief Minister Y Khemchand is of the view that construction of border fence along the India-Myanmar border in Churachandpur district is an urgent necessity considering the prevailing situation in the State.
Keeping this in mind, the State Cabinet on May 7 deliberated on the issue of border fencing and decided to commence the border fencing works.
As compensation has already been paid to the affected land owners, the Ministry of Home Affairs is likely to start the border fencing works soon.
The total length of the international boundary between India and Myanmar is 1643 Kms.
Out of these, 400 Kms of the international border have been fenced by March 2026, said the sources.
The Manipur sector of India-Myanmar border is 398 Kms long.
The Government of India has been working to fence the entire 398 Kms of the Manipur sector of India-Myanmar border.
The 27 Kms long Churachandpur section of India-Myanmar boundary which runs from BP 43 to BP 47 comes under package number 5 .
Notably, the Government of India sanctioned a whopping Rs 31,000 crore to fence the entire 1643 Kms long India-Myanmar border in September 2024 .
Earlier, in February 2024, the Government of India decided to modify the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and to fence the entire 1643 Kms of India-Myanmar border.
But several Zou organisations challenged the Government of India's decision.
A delegation of Zou CSOs went to the border village of Behiang village on August 19, 2024, staged a protest demonstration and held talks with the Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), the Assam Rifles and local leaders including the chief of the village.
During the meeting with the BRTF and the Assam Rifles, the members of the Zou CSOs voiced strong opposition against construction of the border fence.
A protest demonstration was also held on December 3, 2024 at Churachandpur denouncing the Centre's decision to scrap FMR and construct a border fence.
Among others, the demonstration was attended by Saikot MLA Paolienlal Haokip, Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip and Singngat MLA Chinlunthang.
Around 150 to 200 metre stretch of the fencing between BP 62 and subsidiary BP 62/2 near New Somtal village, Chandel district under Molcham police station was found cut and dismantled.
The fencing was found systematically cut at the base and brought down on the ground.
The district police suspected the miscreants dismantled the fencing at the border sharing with Myanmar's Chin State and partially with the Sagaing State during the wee hours of January 14 and 15.Earlier, around 150-200 metres of the border fencing near BP 68 near Changpol village in Chandel district was found cut by miscreants on the night of December 2, 2025 .
