Imphal, July 08 2025:
In a disturbing development, Manipur is witnessing a steady surge in Dengue cases, with Imphal West district being the worst affected.
According to the State Malaria Officer, Manipur has confirmed 74 Dengue cases this year, with Imphal West reporting the highest number (36 cases), followed by Imphal East (10), Bishnupur (8), Thoubal (8), Chandel (1), Tengnoupal (1), Churachandpur (1), Senapati (1), Tamenglong (1), Kakching (3), Ukhrul (4) and Kamjong (1) .
However, a report received by The Sangai Express from other well placed sources indicates 86 confirmed cases and 15 probable cases of Dengue, with Imphal West accounting for 73 cases.

The sources continued that Imphal East has reported 10 Dengue cases this year, while other districts have reported fewer cases: Tengnoupal and Chandel have 1 case each.
Bishnupur has 1 confirmed case and 6 probable cases, and Churachandpur has 8 probable cases.
Additionally, Jiribam reported one case, but the same was listed as probable due to the lack of viral lab testing facilities.
Similarly, eight Dengue cases tested positive clinically in Churachandpur, but they have been classified as probable cases since the samples couldn't be sent to RIMS or JNIMS for confirmation.
Six probable Dengue cases in Bishnupur also showed clinical positivity, but further details couldn't be gathered due to communication gaps and missing contact information, according to these sources.
Manipur has also seen multiple Malaria cases this year.
While the total number of Malaria cases couldn't be confirmed, reports indicate that Imphal West has 3 cases, Kangpokpi has 1, Chandel has 1, Thoubal has 8, and Kamjong has 17, with most cases coming from other States and Myanmar.
It is reported that the Malaria case in Kangpokpi was imported from Myanmar, while those in Thoubal were contracted near the Indo-Myanmar border.
Meanwhile, the areas in Kamjong where Malaria cases have been reported are located near the Myanmar border.
Notable, Manipur has seen a consistent rise in Dengue cases over the years.
The State reported 37 cases in 2020, which increased to 203 in 2021 and 352 (160 confirmed + 192 probable) in 2022 .
However, 2024 witnessed a significant surge with 2,022 cases and 5 fatalities.
Dengue mosquitoes breed in stagnant water found in and around homes, often in discarded items like unused tyres, broken utensils, and uncovered water containers.
Preventing mosquito breeding by eliminating stagnant water sources can help prevent Dengue outbreaks.
