Imphal, July 06 2026:
In an initiative that is as laudable as it is inspiring, around 200 students have united under the banner of For Better Kangleipak to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness across Manipur.
The group has been actively conducting cleanliness drives at several public places in both rural and urban areas, including markets, roadsides, and other community areas.
The initiative aims to encourage people to maintain a clean environment and to instill a sense of civic responsibility among the people.
For Better Kangleipak was formed on July 6, 2025, by Chongtham Chenglailakpa and Wangkheimayum Mangal (co-founders).
Equipped with gloves, garbage bags, and other cleaning materials, the volunteers have collected large amounts of litter and ensured the proper disposal of garbage.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Chongtham Chenglailakpa said that the group has so far conducted cleanliness drives at Cheiraoching, Yaralpat, Lamphelpat, Langol Punshilok, Karang, Sendra, Lamdeng, Iroishemba, Ima Keithel, and Keibi.
Saying that the group comprises around 200 volunteers, most of whom are students from different parts of Manipur, he added that the group has not taken any financial assistance from the Government so far.
Chenglailakpa further said that he and Mangal initiated the cleanliness drives using their own resources to purchase garbage bags, hand gloves, face masks, and drinking water for the volunteers.
Saying that some well-wishers, impressed by the group's efforts, have occasionally contributed donations to support the initiative, he maintained that the group has also carried out cleanliness drives in collaboration with officials of the Social Welfare and Forest Departments.
Expressing concern over the widespread littering of waste such as food wrappers, plastic packaging, and discarded water bottles, Chenglailakpa said the volunteers dedicate their holidays to cleaning these public spaces in the hope of fostering a cleaner and more environmentally conscious Manipur.
Keeping a place neat and clean requires discipline, he said, adding that the volunteers feel a strong sense of accomplishment and pride after completing each cleanliness drive.
Saying that the group hopes to extend its initiative to the hill districts and encourage more people to participate in keeping their surroundings clean, he added that the prevailing situation, however, is not conducive at present.
Emphasising the importance of public participation, he said that civic sense is essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
