'Only one day session is against people'

Imphal, August 27 2023: Women wing of Thawai Meerel has called for a protest demonstration against the proposed one-day Assembly session on August 29 .

Convenor of the Thawai Meerel Women Wing, Th Sujata while addressing a press conference at Manipur Press Club, observed that the one day session, after so much has happened since May 3, is against the desire and wishes of the people of Manipur.

She stated the session is scheduled just for namesake and asked whether the elected members will be able to discuss at length the unrest prevailing in the State for nearly four months.

She further asked whether they will be able to take any resolution and bring solution to the present crisis during the one day session.

If the State Government fails to discuss and come out with a concrete resolution to end the crisis, the body will continue their relay hunger strike.

Notably, the organisation based in Singjamei is holding relay mass hunger strike since August 21 demanding amalgamation of all Civil Society Organisations in Manipur and a special or emergency Assembly session to address the prevailing crisis.

Their first priority is to save Manipur, she said while warning to further intensify their agitation if the Government continues to sideline their demands.

Sujata went on to say that opening schools, colleges and other business establishments is not the solution to the present problem.

The Government should consider the uneasy calm prevailing at the peripheral areas of the valley districts and pitiable lives the displaced people are leading at relief camps and other shelter centres, she said.

She also asked why a large number of Central Armed Police Force deployed in the State are unable to perform their duty in the hill districts and prevent firing incidents heard every now and then by Kuki militants at peripheral areas of the valley districts.

Maintaining that the proposed session is unsatisfactory and unlikely to serve the wishes of the people, Th Sujata called upon all sections of the society to stage a protest demonstration in their respective locality from 11 am onward tomorrow until the session adjourns and raise slogan for convening a purposeful session at the earliest.
