Chhattisgarh's Madhusudan claimed the first gold medal of the 4th Youth (boys/girls) National Weightlifting Championship with a lift of 174 kgs in men's 50 kg event at Khuman Lampak SAG Hall today.
Madhusudan lifted 79 kg in snatch and 95 kg in the clean and jerk to pip the hosts' M Ibotombi by 4 kg.
R Udhayakumar of Tamil Nadu secured the bronze with a total lift of 165 kg.
The opening ceremony of the eight day competition was inaugurated by the chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and presided by Sports Minister N Biren while president of Indian Weightlifting Federation IPS (Retd) Harbhajan Singh and the Federation's general secretary Balbir Singh Bhatia graced the occasion as the guests of honour.
In all 325 lifters from 23 States and one Union Territory are participating in the Championship.
