With an enviable collection of 46 medals including 17 gold and 13 silver which tallied to 322 points, Union Taekwondo Association, Keishamthong claimed the overall team championship title in the inaugural edition of the Governor's Taekwondo Cup Manipur 2005 competition that concluded at Khuman Lampak Indoor stadium today.
The second position was bagged Creative Taekwondo Institute, Sagolband at 162 points consisting of seven gold, six silver and 10 bronze medals while Nambol had to settle for the third place with medal haul of eight gold, three silvers and six bronzes.
The competition organised by All Manipur Taekwondo Association since March 31 was participated by players from 18 affiliated units.
In his address as the chief guest of the closing ceremony, Governor Dr SS Sidhu exulted at the encouraging number of young Taekwondo players who endeavoured for glory of their respective units.
Games and sports - be it team event or individual item, besides developing mental and physical abilities of the youth, help in nurturing discipline in them.
The Nation needs healthy and disciplined youth.
They play an important role in shaping the destiny of the Nation.
Therefore, sports movement deserves all out support and encouragement, said the Governor.
Highlighting on the origin of the martial arts sports that requires high degree of discipline, self control, confidence, strategy and presence of mind, the chief guest recalled of the laurels brought to Manipur by the talented youth in the field of game and sports.
Also basking under the glorious achievement of Manipur in national level competition of the sports Dr Sidhu expressed gratification on Thoibinao Chanu having the distinction of being the first international level silver medallists of the country.
Urging the State association to eye for further glory in various level of the sports he called upon the AMTA units to make concerted effort in producing more champions.
