Imphal, December 23 2014:
Celebrating its 71st anniversary, Rupmahal Theatre inaugurated the 15th Rupmahal Artistes Memorial Drama Festival 2014 today.
Government of Manipur Consultant RK Nimai, Art and Culture Secretary K Radhakumar and Rupmahal Theatre Chairman K Heramani graced the function as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Meitram Bira Award 2014 was conferred on renowned singer Asem Bimola at the function.
The award carries Rs 5000, a citation and a shawl.
Speaking at the occasion, RK Nimai said that although it is a fact that Manipur is known to the world because of its rich cultural heritage and sports, the State Government is giving less attention to promotion of culture and artistes.
Saying that culture is a vast subject and it has different aspects, RK Nimai said that the Government is seemingly unable to give attention to all the aspects of culture due to this vastness.
Lauding the State Government for taking a Cabinet decision to set up a Culture University, the retired bureaucrat said that such steps indicate that the Government is giving atleast 70 per cent priority to development of culture if not 100 per cent.
Maintaining that theatre is among the art forms which have lots of constraints, RK Nimai said that there is need for introduction of modern and creative plots to attract audience.
K Radhakumar said that every drama/play must have the potential to vividly portray the reality of the society before audience.
Senior and retired artistes were also feted at the function.
