Imphal, April 27 2011:
Police swung into action today to disperse a sit-in-protest at Kakching Bazar and foil an attempt to take out a rally in protest against holding the training programme of the Congress party on flagship programmes for Chandel district at Khangshim village, which the protestors claim to be a part of Thoubal district.
Since early morning today, all the shops in Kakching and Kakching Lamkhai down their shutters even as members of Joint NonGovernmental Voluntary Organisations, Kakching and local Meira Paibis staged a sit-in-protest at Kakching Bazar.
However, a large number of police personnel descended at the protest site and disperse the protestors.
Afterward, an attempt to take out a protest rally till Kakching Lamkhai was also foiled by the police.
Unhappy over the police conduct, Joint Non-Governmental Organisations, Kakching submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal district.
The memorandum pointed out that settlers in some villages formed very recently within the revenue district of Thoubal have put up signboards indicating their location as Chandel district.
In the just concluded Census operation, more than 30 such villages are the bone of contention among the officers in-charge.
Subsequently, the matter had been brought to the notice of Gauhati High Court which passed an interim order vide WP (C) No.675 of 2010 dated 02-11-2010 in favour of the petitioner.
Accordingly, the matter was taken to the notice of the Registrar General, Census Operations, India during his visit on February 12, 2011 .
But holding the awareness programme on flagship programmes has thrown the petitioners into an embarrassing situation.
