Imphal, January 17 2015 :
Expressing grave concern on the discovery of skeletal remains and human skulls during excavation at the erstwhile compound of Tombisana High School on December 25 last, ex-Minister O Joy has demanded both the Central and State Government to investigate the matter by constituting an independent high level committee and establish veracity behind the discovery of the human remains at the earliest.
Addressing a press meet at his residence located at Singjamei Kakwa on Saturday, O Joy said that the discovery of the human remains which is highly suspicious came in the backdrop of cases of disappearance of people after they were pulled up by security forces from different parts of the State.
The ex-Minister asserted that families of the disappeared people have the right to know identification of the discovered skeletal remains and human skulls.
Stating that right to life enshrined in the Constitution is the most important right of the people, O Joy maintained that the discovery case should not be taken lightly as it is closely related with right to life.
The erstwhile compound of Tombisana High School which is situated near City Police Station was used by paramilitary forces and commandos as their base camp in the past.
Case of disappearance of people is rare in other States.
The State of Manipur recorded highest number of case of disappearance of people during the period of 1994-95.There have been also instances where family members of people who went missing filed cases in the court seeking justice to the missing cases.
Such is the situation in the State, the former Minister observed.
There has been report that the State Government handed over the discovery case to CBI.
However, there was still a need for the government to act on the case acknowledging the sentiments of the people, O Joy added.
