Cong poised to assume power in 11 MCs, NPs

Imphal, January 16 2016 : With the final results of the local body election held on January 11 declared today, Congress party has won majority in as many as 11 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.

However, Deputy Chief Minister and Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Gaikha-ngam has claimed that Congress has secured majority in 21 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats while non-Congress parties have won the remaining five Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.

However, independent candidates have won the maximum number of seats in Samurou NP and Thong-khong Lakshmi Bazar NP of which results were declared today.

In Samurou NP, Congress won three Councillors' seats, BJP one and independents seven.

Independent candidates literally swept Thongkhong Lakshmi Bazar NP winning as many as 10 seats while BJP managed to secure a single seat.

The final tally of the election results puts Congress at 108, BJP 62, CPI two, LJP four and independents 102 .

Congress and BJP won six seats each in Moirang MC.

Congress has secured majority in Jiribam MC, Andro NP, Lamsang NP, Sekmai NP, Yairipok MC, Heirok NP, Lilong (Thoubal) MC, Kakching MC, Sugnu MC, Bishnupur MC and Ningthou-khong MC.

On the other hand, BJP has reached the magic figure of majority in Lamlai MC, Mayang Imphal MC, Kakching Khunou MC, Nambol MC.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam while briefing media persons by the sideline of a film release function at Hotel Imphal here today, claimed that Congress party has been gaining strength day by day.

It is a party blessed by god and loved by people.

People have full trust in the incumbent Government led by Chief Minister O Ibobi.

Results of the local body election have once again testified that Congress party is trusted by people of both the hills and the valley.

He went on to predict a landslide victory for Congress party in the next Manipur State Legislative Assembly election which is due next year.

Conveying gratitude to all the people who voted for Congress candidates in the recent local body election, Gaikhangam pledged that Congress party would never do anything which may belie people's trust and faith.

However, the Deputy Chief Minister refused to give any comment to a query regarding the possibility of ministry reshuffle.
