Thoubal, August 01 2013:
Eight vehicles were damaged in a sudden road blockade clamped by irate students at Lilong today.
The flare-up erupted after police arrested Thoubal district president of Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Md Mehtab alias Abung yesterday.
Prior to the road blockade, a large number of students stormed Lilong Police Station demanding immediate release of the student leader.
As Lilong police told the students that they have not arrested Mehtab, and suggested them to enquire about him at Yairipok Police Station, irate students blocked NH-2 (Imphal-Moreh road) in front of Lilong Higher Secondary School.
During their demonstration, the students damaged two diesel auto rickshaws, four Magic vans, one Maruti van and one car.
The agitating students have also decided to call Thoubal district bandh from tomorrow till Mehtab is released.
Essential services, religious activities and media would be however exempted from the purview of the bandh, they added.
MSF headquarters Vice-President Boynao said that the students body has taken serious note of the arrest of Mehtab.
Saying that Mehtab is a student leader who is trying to bring justice to Yairipok rape victim, Boynao said that his detention by police would further aggravate the issue.
Meanwhile, information received from Yairipok Police Station said that they arrested Mehtab yesterday.
He has been remanded to police custody for five days after bringing him before CJM Thoubal.
Volunteers of MSF headquarters, MSF Thoubal District Committee, MSF Lilong Committee, All Manipur Muslim Girls Students' Organisation and students of Lilong Higher Secondary School and Lilong Haoreibi College took part in today's agitation.
Meanwhile, Lilong Haoreibi College Students' Union while condemning the arrest of Mehtab pledged support to any people's movement in pursuit of the demand of the student leader's release.
