An Army truck knocked down two Class-III students of KVK Leimakhong to death at 57 Mountain Division Headquarters complex at Leimakhong at around 11 am today.
Tension gripped Leimakhong area after the incident as a huge crowd of locals gathered demanding compensation and punishment of the driver.
The two boys have been identified as Kamgougin Hangshing (8) s/o Chunglin Hangshing and Lammonlen Vaiphei (7) s/o Lunthang Vaiphei of Leimaphong.
Both the boys were the Class III students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Leimakhong.
Information culled out from the incident site said that the two boys were returning home with Kamgougin's uncle Hamkholun riding on Honda Activa (MN 01-4005) from their school.
Even as the the trio were driving towards their house, an Army Supply Core (ASC) vehicle (01D 140148-K) mowed them down from behind killing the two boys at the spot.
However, Kamgougin's uncle Hamkholun miraculously escaped with minor injuries.
A large crowd of Leimakhong locals gathered at the site after the incident.
The shopkeepers of Leimakhong Bazar also joined the crowd by closing down their shops.
The crowd picketed the area and did not allow to move out the Army vehicle and two corpses from the incident site until their demands were fulfilled.
They demanded Rs 10 lakhs each as compensations and other demands as per customary law.
A negotiation was later brought with 577 Army Supply Core (ASC) Commander Col Vikram Singh and the agitating locals as the former assured the bereaved families to do the needful from the side of the Army.
In the presence of Sapermeina police station OC, the Commander also assured the families to provide Rs 20 thousand from his pocket.
Sapermeina police deposited the corpses at RIMS morgue for post mortem examination and took the Army vehicle in their custody.
However, Army refused to handover the involved driver to police today.
They insist to handover him tomorrow.
