Social Upliftment and Rural Education (SURE) organised a one-day consultation cum interaction programme on physically challenged people at Manipur Press Club today.
Convenor of State Co-ordination Committee for Physically Challenged Person, Ksh Santa Singh and SURE Secretary Ksh Joychandra were the chief guest and president of the function respectively.
HD Foundation Secretary Jashobanta Singh and Daneshor Singh of State Social Welfare Department and Y Nabachandra of DIC Imphal East were the guests of honour.
While speaking in the function, Daneshor Singh informed the gathering on various schemes being taken up by Social Welfare Department.
He said that scholarships are being provided to various physically challenged students for their studies.
They may approach the Union Ministry of Empowerment and Social Justice if they wish to pursue higher studies and professional studies, he added.
Saying that the State Government is planning to provide internet facilities to physically challenged people soon, Nabachandra added that the scheme would enable them to download application forms and gather information through internet.
Mentioning the Disabilities Unemployment Allowance Scheme, Nabachandra said that any physically challenged person having passed Matriculation may apply for the said scheme.
He added that there is also a scheme known as Economic Assistance Scheme for Educated and Unemployed Disables wherein Rs 3000 is provided to every beneficiary.
Nabachandra also announced that a scheme called Marriage Incentive Award would be launched on World Disable Day.
Incentive awards would be given to those who have tied knot with a physically challenged person, he added.
HD Foundation Secretary Jashobanta said, the society feels that physically challenged people would not complain even if they do not get their due rights.
On the contrary, he added, physically challenged people want to do something for the family and society like any other normal person.
And they are capable to contribute as a normal person if they are given some support, he added.
SURE Secretary Joychandra said that most of physically challenged people are not aware of the schemes provided by the Government as the concerned authorities do not provide the required information to them.
