The director General of Police AK Parashar has charged that Kuki rebels are responsible for the abduction of tanker driver Md Sahauddin (31) from Khatkatti area of Assam.
Talking to The Sangai Express at his office chamber today, the State police chief contended that transporters have informed the matter to the Government of the tanker driver�s abduction.
He also hastened to add that till date no specific information on the whereabouts of the missing driver has been officially established and no intimation has been received from either the Assam or Nagaland police on the matter.
To a question on what measures the State Government or the police force have initiated to rescue the captive, Parashar claimed that the Manipur Government has conveyed the matter to the Assam and Nagaland counterparts while from the police side DGPs of the two States have been urged to take all possible steps to trace the abducted driver.
The DGP also expressed confidence of the Assam and Nagaland police making all out efforts to free the driver from the clutches of the rebels.
With the State Government taking serious note of the abduction, a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister and attended among others by the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the Commissioner (Transport) was held on September 29 where decisions were taken to galvanise all resources to trace Sahauddin, he informed.
The Police Department has also been instructed to take up appropriate measures to trace and rescue two business persons abducted by unidentified gunmen from Bongyang area on Imphal-Moreh route on Sept 23, said the police officer while adding that the police registered a case on the matter and rescue operations underway at suspected locations.
KRA claims: The Kuki Revolutionary Army has claimed that driver Md Sahauddin is in their custody and made it clear that he has not been abducted for ransom but to hold talks with the drivers' union.
