STDCM sustains ST status demand stir

Imphal, September 02 2022: In continuation of its series of agitation in pursuance of the demand for recognising Meetei/Meitei community as Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) organised a sit-in protest at Lamphel supermarket, here, on Friday.

Leaders and members of different CSOs, Meira Paibi organisations and student bodies, women vendors of Lamphel supermarket and students participated in the protest.

Interacting with the media on the sidelines of the protest, STDCM joint secretary Laishram Birajkishwar said that the committee has been carrying out democratic protest to mount pressure on the state government for sending the required recommendations and relevant documents to the Centre for recognising the Meetei/Meitei community as ST.

However, the government is ignoring the mater for several years, which is unfortunate for the indigenous community, he said and added that they might resort to other forms of protest if the government continues to undermine their demand.
