Farmers warned against use of khaini
Source: The Sangai Express
Imphal, September 26 2012:
Agriculture Scientist Dr A Thoithoi has cautioned farmers against using scented tobacco (Khaini) and Tetracycline (antibiotic) concoction as pest-control mixtures.
When informed that some farmers in the State have been applying khaini-tetracycline mixture to check plant diseases, particularly pest menace, Dr Thoithoi told The Sangai Express that even though such a practice was reported in the past, farmers have been advised to abandon the same for nicotine contained in khaini is equally harmful for the plants as it is for human.

Expressing surprise on being told that information about use of the concoction has been received here, he simply advised all concerned that anti-biotics have been specifically manufactured for use in human beings while for controlling plant diseases applying insecticides/pesticides prescribed by subject experts would be the wisest thing.
Misusing any type of medicine is harmful to the human beings and thus the best way is to stick to medical ethics and norms for experimenting by amateurs is bound to affect both man and plants in the long term, asserted the scientist.
