Ukhrul, September 26 2012:
Under the initiative of district police, the Gandhi Chowk in the heart of Ukhrul town has been beautified by adorning with traffic signs all around the paling statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
On Wednesday, Ukhrul Superintendent of Police K Kabib inaugurated the beautified Gandhi Chowk and the adjacent traffic Islands in the presence of his sub-ordinate officers and representatives of Airtel Service Provider.
The beautification of Gandhi Chowk has been undertaken as part of overhauling traffic regulation in the town and has been implemented by Ukhrul police with material support issued under corporate social responsibility of Airtel company.
"The implementation is the first of its kind in the district, and more traffic regulation programme will come up in near future," Kabib said.
Public have lauded the effort taken to give face lift to the memorial Gandhi Chowk as the initiative came following vandalisation of the statue of Father of Nation by miscreants some months back.
On the sideline of the programme, the SP also disclosed the difficulties faced in managing traffic in the town with increasing vehicles on the road and high concentration of population.
The district has a sanction of only five traffic policemen including a head constable to supervise the duty.
"On public demand, more policemen have been deputed for traffic and is now being headed by a Sub-Inspector," he stated.
In near future, the district headquarters known as the taxi town of Manipur would see a better and bigger traffic system.
The district police have proposed to the State government for setting up of a traffic unit with 32 policemen.
Meanwhile, the SP has stated that the traffic regulation will get more intensified by keeping a regular tab on vehicles and driving in the town.
Ukhrul police has decided to undertake a regular check on the veracity of driver and rash driving, the validity of vehicle papers and other related matters.
