Apart from performing religious rites and rituals since early morning to predict the fortune of the State in the days to come, and paying obeisance to the god for bountiful blessing in the year gone by, an exciting race between two boats with competitors in traditional attires is the main highlight of the festival.
The boats are operated by rowers and each boat has a leader or captain called the 'Tengmai Leppa'.
Thousands of people from different parts of the state gathered around the Thangapat to witness the event.
