Imphal, January 17 2016:
Pointing out
that a temporary market shed
was being constructed to
provide vending space to
vendors of New Market and
Lakshmi Market after the two
markets were damaged in the
devastating earthquake of
January 4, Works Minister Dr
Kh Ratankumar has appealed to
the MLA of Thangmeiband AC
to cooperate in the temporary
market construction work as a
responsible legislator.
Speaking to media persons
at his Babupara quarters to-
day, Dr Ratankumar stated
that women vendors of the
two market complexes were
demanding an alternative
vending space until the two
market complexes were fully
restored and the Government
was under immense pressure
as they threatened to launch
different forms of agitation.
After considering the ven-
dors' appeal together with the
Chief Minister, the Social
Welfare Minister and the
IMC Chairperson, it was de-
cided to construct a temporary
market shed after identifying
a spacious spot within the
bazar area.
Appealing to the
Thangmeiband MLA to un-
derstand the woes of the
women vendors, Dr
Ratankumar invited the MLA
to come out with constructive
suggestions so as to resolve
the matter amicably.
As all the vendors of
Lakshmi Market and New
Market whose combined
strength is above 2000 cannot
be accommodated at the mar-
ket shed being constructed at
Thangal Bazar, the Govern-
ment has been considering to
build another temporary mar-
ket on the road which runs to
the west of Johnstone Higher
Secondary School.
"These works are for the
welfare of public.
Neither the
Chief Minister nor I nor engineers has/have any personal interest in them", Dr
Ratankumar clarified.
Due procedures have also been initiated to issue work
order regarding construction of the temporary market, he
added.
