Imphal East District Police Commandos this afternoon arrested in all six persons including the general secretary of All Manipur United Labourers' Front on alleged charge of confiscating mobile phone handsets, gas cylinders and DVD players from restaurants and hotels.
According to information received from the Police Department, the arrested persons are Soraishram Samujao (27) and Soraishram Roshikanta alias Toto (24), both residents of Mongsangei Mayai Leikai, Tayenjam Ranjan (40) and Thingom Hemjit (22), both residents of Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai, Sapam Caliber (24) of Samurou Awang Leikai and Sarangthem Tiken (33) of Chanam Pukhri Mapal.
Among them, Tayenjam Ranjan is the general secretary of All Manipur United Labourers' Front, police said, adding that the office of the Front has been sealed and files and documents seized.
Along with their arrest, 2 gas cylinders, 8 mobile phone handsets, 3 wall clocks, 2 DVD players, 2 CD machines, 1 stabiliser, 1 TV set, 3 speakers and Rs 1000 in cash have also been recovered from their possession, police added.
Meanwhile, condemning the police crackdown, president of All Manipur United Labourers' Front Ch Shamu Singh has explained that the drive against seedy restaurants is being conducted in the interest of the public and morality of the society.
However, the crackdown which comes just a day after pulling up a police personnel who was found indulging in immoral activities from Thoubal yesterday by the special task of the Front is ridiculous, he said, while disclosing that the police personnel in question had even tried to bribe the functionaries of the Front to cover up the whole affairs while pretentiously lauding the efforts of the Front.
