Cultural Practices and Identity Politics in Manipur

A new book titled "Cultural Practices and Identity Politics in Manipur" was released today at the office of the Centre for Alternative Discourse, Manipur (CADM), Khoyathong here.
The book co-edited by Laishram Churchil, News Editor, The Sangai Express, Imphal and Lisham Hen-thoiba, UGC Senior Research Fellow, Manipur University is published by the Concept Publishing Company Private Limited, New Delhi for CADM.
The book is a compendium of 12 essays earlier published in the quarterly journal 'Alternative Perspectives' .
This volume consists of three different themes which are closely inter-related.
The first theme on identity deals with the assertion of discomfort against homogenising articulation of identity and the over-simplification of gender issues on the pretext of wo-men being a celebrated identity within certain constructed sensibilities.

The second theme on economy examines underdevelopment of Manipur's economy and its ramifications.
The essays of the last theme on resistance underscore the forms of protest which are arguably belittled within the purview of the all pervasive armed conflict and its diverse narratives.
Part-I of this volume contains four essays�� 'Inside and Outside of Ethnic Disclosures: Khoibu as a Separate Tribe' by G Amarjit Sharma, 'Political Interpretation of Ritual: Case of Lai Haraoba of Manipur' by Otojit Kshetrimayum, 'Lai Haraoba and Role of the Maibis' by Shilleima Chanu Naoroibam and 'Thadou-Kuki World Views and Religious Practices before the Advent of Christianity' by Nehkholun Haokip.
The second part has four chapters namely; 'Economic Question in Manipur and the Discourse of Development' by Malem Ningthouja, 'Perspective on the Industrial Scenario in Manipur' by K Gyanendra Singh, 'Employment Structure of Agricultural Labourers in Manipur' by Silvia Lisam and 'Anchoring India's Look East Policy' by Kangujam Sanatomba.
The third part comprises of another four essays viz; 'Mapping Repressive Practices against Women in the Meitei Society' by Shreema Ningombam, 'Motherhood and the Politics of Resistance' by Diana Naorem, 'Resisting the 'Other': Ethnographic Exploration of the Lai Haraoba in the Contemporary' by Rekha Konsam and 'The Kuki National Assembly: Historicity and Evolution' by Sonthang Haokip.
Other published works of CADM include Look East Policy & India's North East: Polemics and Perspectives, Quest for Development in Manipur: Continuity, Constraints & Contradictions, and Location, Space & Development: Development Trajectories in India's North East.
