National Girl Child Day 2023 : Protection of girl child rights emphasized

Imphal, January 24 2023: The Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur organized a one day awareness programme on 'Illegal Adoption, Child Marriage and POCSO Act" today in connection with the observation of National Girl Child Day 2023 at Tribal Research Institute.

Around 100 Anganwadi workers from ICDS Projects of Imphal West and Imphal East districts participated in the awareness programme.

The objective of the programme is to sensitise the frontline workers on the rights and issues relating to girl child.

The importance of educating the girl child was also highlighted to empower the girl child and for the development of a good society, said a press note by the Social Welfare Department.

Konsam Saroja, Deputy Director (CP) and resource persons namely Thongam Gyanilaxmi, Programme Manager (SARA); Reena Chanu Moirangthem, Legal cum Probation Officer and Mala Lisham, Programme Officer (SCPS) .

The resource persons spoke at length on illegal adoption, child marriage and POCSO Act.

A pledge to protect and safeguard the rights of girl child was also taken by the participants.

Meanwhile, Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP), Manipur Prant also celebrated National Girl Child Day today at the Seloi Hindi High School (Bal Vidya Mandir), a school adopted by Gadadhar Abhyudaya Prakalpa -Ramiakrishna Mission, Imphal at Upper Charhajare in Kangpokpi district.

Joybi Heikrujam, National Project Member, Mahila Bal Vikas of BVP said that National Girl Child Day is celebrated on 24 January every year in India to spread awareness about the rights of girls and to highlight the inequalities that they face in their lives and to promote the importance of their education, health, and nutrition, said a press release by BVP, Manipur Prant, Regional Secretary.

Nongthombam Muhindro Singh, Regional Secretary (Sampark), BVP said that National Girl Child Day is observed this year on the theme 'Digital Generation, Our Generation, Our Time is Now - Our Rights, Our Future'.

He further said that the objective of celebrating National Girl Child Day is to provide support and opportunities to the girls of India.

An anaemia screening camp was also conducted as a part of the programme in which children and housewives were screened for Hemoglobin levels.

Sanitary pads, stationery items and health supplements were distributed to participating children, adolescent girls and lactating mothers.
