Imphal, October 31 2016:
New districts should not be created based on race or ethnicity of the residents, stated president of All Manipur United Club Organisation Ph Deban in a press meet held at Kwakeithel Akham Leikai, Imphal today.
He said AMUCO is not against the decision of the State Government in creating two new full-fledged districts but forming two new districts should not create any tension or conflict among the ethnic communities of the State.
All authorities concerned should also consider the fact that Sadar Hills and Jiribam, local residents of Phungyar, Ukhrul district, Tipaimukh, Churachandpur district, Tongjei Mari, Tamenglong district and Tengnoupal, Chandel district have also been demanding separate districts.
Deban highlighted some differences in the number of districts which Manipur has as compared to neighbouring States like Nagaland.
Nagaland has a total population of about 19.79 lakh spread over 16,579 sq kms and has 11 districts.
Manipur has a total population of 28.56 lakh spread over 22,327 sq kms and has only nine districts, he added.
He further said that all the concerned should give more emphasis on bringing an amicable solution to the difference in opinion of creating two new districts.
Deban also urged the State Government to reorganize the district boundaries and clear demarcation for all districts.
The press meet was also attended by general secretary of AMUCO S Sanjoy and other office bearers.
