Imphal, October 31 2016:
Taking strong exception to the State Government's failure to declare Jiribam as a full fledged revenue district, the Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) has called a total bandh in Jiribam from 7 pm of November 2 till 6 am of November 4 .
According to a press release issued by JDDC convenor W Dinesh, a decision to this effect was adopted at an emergency meeting held today.
The way the State Government has been sleeping over the issue despite acknowledging that the demand for district status to Jiribam is justified sounds like a mockery to the people of Jiribam.
Objections raised by the United Naga Council (UNC) to the demand for creating Jiribam sub-division lack rationale.
It has been clarified several times that creation of Jiribam district would not infringe upon any other existing district including Tamenglong district.
JDDC has been demanding creation of a new district out of the existing area of Jiribam.
It is rather unfortunate that UNC cannot understand even this simple fact.
The UNC may confirm the fact from the official letter sent by the Delimitation Commission of India which approved creation of Jiribam district.
The UNC should stop raising irrational objections and refrain from doing anything which may jeopardise the popular demand, JDDC asserted.
JDDC has been disheartened by the State Government's attitude of showing more concern to such irrational objections rather than addressing the legitimate demand.
People of Jiribam can also take recourse to extreme steps just like some groups opposing the demand for district status to Jiribam have been doing in case their patience wears out, it said.
It further informed that essential services would be exempted from the purview of the total bandh.
