The State unit of All India Trinamool Congress has been set up and two joint convenors appointed to supervise activities of the newly opened unit, Lok Sabha MP of the party Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has announced.
Dr Kakoli, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of Home Affairs arrived here today morning for a few hours visit in an Indigo flight from Guwahati.
On her arrival, a reception function was hosted at the conference hall of ISKCON complex here.
Former MP Kim Gangte, former MLA L Ibomcha and former Deputy Speaker TT Haokip were among other leaders who attended the function.
Interacting with mediapersons on the sidelines of the reception function, Dr Kakoli announced that a unit of the Trinamool Congress has been opened in Manipur and NJ Hoinu Misao and Sumantibala Ningthoujam have been appointed as joint convenors to oversee functioning of the unit.
As members of Mahila Congress of the party, they would also work in both the hills and the valley.
Stating that she is happy to meet some people who are ready to dedicate their lives for the welfare of Kangleipak while Trinamool Congress has been concerned about the existing conflict situation, Dr Kakoli said after having talks with these people, she was convinced that Manipur can progress on the path of development.
Dr Kakoli also assured that she would be highlighting problems of Manipur to the leader of Trinamool Congress Mamata Banerjee so that the same would be taken up for discussion in the Parliament.
Saying that personally she is against excesses being committed by the security forces on the innocent civilians of Manipur as well as ill-treatment of women and children, Dr Kakoli observed that special focus should be given on empowerment of women and providing employment to educated youths.
These measures would help in restoration of peace in Manipur, she added.
Further, assuring that her party would try its level best in ensuring withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur, Dr Kakoli said that all the party MPs have been already directed to pay attention to the issues of Manipur and raise them in the Parliament.
She also expressed remorse over the fact that Manipur is yet to be included in the railway map of the country.
Dr Kakoli left Imphal for Kolkata in the afternoon.
