Two individuals who robbed gold jewellery, cash and mobile phones from a liquor vendor by posing themselves as UG cadres have been rounded up by local people and they were later handed over to police.
According to information culled from the spot, Naorem Bode (30) s/o Dolen and Thongam Boynao alias Pradip alias Sanayaima (30) s/o Biren, both belonging to Singjamei Naorem Leikai were pulled up from their homes by people of the locality.
The two were pulled up by the local people as the needle of suspicion turned towards them in the theft of mobile phones, gold jewellery and cash from a liquor vendor located at the same locality in the night of May 8 .
Since the day, sale and consumption of liquor as well as all kinds of intoxicating drugs have been banned in Naorem Leikai.
Moreover, local Meira Paibis took out a protest rally against abuse of drugs and liquor last Sunday night.
Next day, a rumour started doing the round that the act of robbery was done at the behest of a local man.
Soon it was learnt that the rumour originated from another local man.
The matter reached the local club and both the rumour-monger and the accused were summoned.
With intervention of the local club, the matter was resolved amicably.
In the meantime, people's suspicion increased and Bode was pulled up from his home this morning.
At his disclosure, Boynao was also pulled up.
The duo was produced in a public meeting held at Naorem Leikai community under the aegis of Naharol Yaiphakol (local club) and the local Meira Paibis.
In the meantime, some police commandos came there in a Rakshak jeep and insisted that the two accused be handed over to them.
However, local people instead of handing over the two accused to the commando team, called a team of Singjamei Police and the duo was handed over to them.
