Imphal, June 23:
Around 3000 hectares of agricultural fields located in Keirou Loukon and Leimarou Loukon under Thanga Assembly Constituency which have been submerged for many years after the Loktak Project was commissioned may be reclaimed for cultivation again.
To reclaim the lost land, digging work of canal to drain out water from the submerged agricultural fields has been started today.
For this, MLA of Thanga A/C and chief whip of the Government T Mangibabu has sanctioned Rs one lakh from his Local Area Development Fund.
Under the new initiative, a new canal of the length 8 kms (approximately) would be dug out from Keirou Loukon till the Kumbi road.
This canal when completed will be able to drain out backup water collected from upstream in Keirou Loukon to Loktak lake during rainy season.
Personally inspecting the canal digging work today, MLA Mangibabu said that some years back a road was made under PMGSY from Chingmei to Keirenphabi.
This blocked the natural water way resulting in backup water collecting in Keirou Loukon.
Exuding confidence that the submerged fields can be effectively reclaimed once the canal is dug out, Mangibabu asserted that the water from the canal would also help the Loktak Power Project.
The MLA further inspected the construction work of the Wangkhei Pandong canal.
He claimed that once the canal digging work being undertaken with MLA Local Area Development Fund and contributions from the people is completed, water necessary for both kharif and rabi crops can be supplied to the surrounding fields using water pumps.
