Imphal, June 21 2015 :
A pile of garbage here and plastic litters there, these are the most common scenes in the State.
The roadsides have literally been turned into a garbage bin in most parts of the State.
Mapao Jingso also known as Mapao Keithelmanbi is however set to make a difference.
Villagers and Students' Union of the area are striving to make Mapao Jingso the cleanest village in the State.
Located some 16 kilometres from Imphal, the village has about 120 households with a population of 500 approximately.
Sufficient number of dustbins have been installed along roadsides around every corner of the village to maintain cleanliness.
From children to elders, villagers of Mapao Jingso have been strictly instructed to use the installed bins instead of littering.
Students' Union based in the area make it their duty to dispose off the garbage from these bins once every week, Model village secretary Edward Vachung told The Sangai Express.
There are two schools in the village, one Government and one private.
The Government school which was recently upgraded to class ten, has about 200 students enrolled.
Only 20 of the villagers are engaged in Government jobs while the rest depends on agricultural farming for a living, Edward informed.
Primary economic activities of the village are cultivation of seasonal crops, horticultural plants, banana, lemons, poultry farming, piggery, pisciculture etc.
These activities are supported by Agriculture Department, Horticulture and ICAR.
The luscious green surroundings of the village appear to be the manifestation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a 'Clean India' (Swachh Bharat Mission) .
