He said that throat or head and neck cancer often develop from squamous cells (flat, thin, scale-like cells) on the moist tissue lining the larynx, pharynx or mouth.

Most squamous cell carcinomas, which account for 90 percent of all head and neck cancers, are associated with heavy smoking and alcohol use.

Dr Jawade further said that the incidence of head and neck cancer increases with age.

The cases of oral and head and neck cancer in younger patients are also increasing.

Head and neck cancer are treatable cancer if detected in early stage and detection of cancer in early stage also aids in improving the quality of life, he added.
