Imphal, June 21 2015 :
Meitei Eyek Irol Loinasin Lon (MEELAL) is all set to launch 'Pak sanna Meetei Mayek heinabagi khongjang', a new initiative to make majority of the people 'Meetei Mayek' literate.
Speaking to media persons at their office today, MEELAL president in-charge M Naokhamba Meitei stated that under MEELAL's initiative, the Directorate of Language, Planning and Implementation would launch an extensive awareness program on Meitei Mayek from June 22 in different parts of the State.
The first phase would be launched at Moirang Moirangthem Leikai, Bishnupur district and Chaoyaima Hr Sec School, Thoubal.
The campaign would be taken to Lamlong Higher Secondary School and Yangdong High School of Lairik Yengbam Leikai, Imphal East district on June 25, he said.
On June 28, MEELAL would organise a similar programme at Heirangoithong High School in Imphal West District.
For Jiribam and Chandel, dates of such awareness programmes would be notified later, added Naokhamba.
He urged the student community, teachers and all the general public to participate in the awareness programmes on Meetei Mayek as it is very important for generations to come.
Meanwhile MEELAL has been monitoring the 15 days orientation programme on Meetei Mayek which started from yesterday under the aegis of Manipur University, he added.
He said that some of the expert committee members of the programme are not recognized by the State Government or MEELAL.
"The members must have been selected with the vested interest of the Vice Chancellor of MU," Naokhamba alleged.
If the expert committee members commit any mistake regarding Meetei Mayek, all the responsibility should be borne by the VC and the responsible expert committee members.
He informed that students who recently passed the HSLC exam this year with Meetei Mayek as their MIL subject are being goaded to opt for Alternative English in place of Manipuri (Meetei Mayek) as their subject.
Strongly reacting to it, Naokhamba said "School authorities should consider the situation as Meetei Mayek is the only script which we can proudly say
is ours" .
He requested the school authorities to make Meetei Mayek a compulsory subject for students.
Government authorities should recruit Meetei Mayek teachers as there is shortage of teachers.
There are lots of candidates who have successfully passed the Teachers Eligibility Test in Meetei Mayek conducted by the Education Department.
These teachers should be recruited and posted at various Government schools where there is shortage of teaching staff, he added.
