Imphal, August 20 2011:
The demand for the creation of Sadar Hills district is genuine but any hasty decision may invite unwanted outcome, said Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Gaikhangam today.
While the demand by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee is legitimate and justified, chief minister Ibobi Singh's position — that granting of the demand for a full fledged Sadar Hills district cannot override the peace of the state and the sentiment of other communities — is also judicious, said Gaikhangam while talking to the media on the sideline of observing the 57th birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Congress Bhawan here.
He urged the people of the state to maintain peace and eschew violent means of agitation and conveyed out that every problem can and should be resolved through dialogue.
"The government will surely solve the issue of Sadar Hills through dialogue at the earliest," he said.
The 67th birth anniversary was attended by cabinet ministers, MLAs and Congress workers who offered floral tribute to late Rajiv Gandhi.
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee celebrated 67th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister (Late) Rajiv Gandhi as sadbhavana Diwas at the BT road office of Congress Bhavan here today while forest and Environment Minister L Devendra led the observance organised by the Government of Manipur at Manipur Secretariat South Block.
Describing Rajiv Gandhi as an architect of modern India, Devendra said Rajiv Gandhi was elected as a Member of Parliament at the age of 37 before becoming India's youngest Prime Minister three years later.
Hailing Rajiv Gandhi as a visionary, he asserted that it was the late Prime Minister who actually paved the way for framing of the anti-defection law to preserve the status of India as the world's largest democracy as well as breakthrough decisions in the field of education.
The Manipur Secretariat observed was also participated by SPF Council of Ministers and top ranking civil and security officers.
At Congress Bhavan MPCC president Gaikhangam led in paying obeisance to Rajiv Gandhi by laying floral wreath the photograph of the youngest prime Minister of India.
Congress MLAs and members of Mahila Congress, Seva Dal and Youth Congress leaders also participated in the observance.
