Imphal, December 14:
While urging the State Government to take up necessary measures for acquiring land to set up bus parkings at Dimapur, Guwahati, Shillong, etc, All Manipur Inter-State Bus Association has urged for repairing the National Highways passing through the State.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at its North AOC office today, Association president Budha Luwang lamented that inspite of being in the service for more than 20 years, the members of the Association comprising of 15 travel agencies have not been provided proper parking space where the transporters can stay in case of imposition of bandh and blockade along the National Highways and other unforseen natural calamities like landslides along the road.
A memorandum to the effect of converting the MSRTC complex at Imphal as a parking lot for the transporters, acquiring land for setting up similar parking lots outside Manipur and repairing of the National Highways along with ensuring full protection has been submitted to the Transport submitted to the Transport Minister L Jayantakumar today, Budha informed.
In connection with the recent incidents of setting on fire vehicles on alleged ground of bringing in banned tobacco products, Budha said after a serious deliberation the Association has resolved not to allow any of the drivers and handymen of the travel agencies to ply vehicles in case they were found smuggling such banned substances.
The owners of the vehicles indulging in such smuggling would also not be allowed to join any of the travel agencies and association in future, Budha announced.
Moreover, the counters of the travel agencies concerned at Imphal, Guwahati, Shillong and Dimapur would be closed down if any of their staff were also found indulging in such activities, he added.
