Kakching, May 16 2021:
A Hog Deer (Axis porcinus) which was rescued by members of Chairel Mayai Leikai Youth's Enlightened Club on Saturday after it ventured into the locality and then released to the wild, died on Sunday after getting attacked by dogs.
The carcass of the deer was later buried at a suitable site by Kakching District Forest staff and Honorary Wildlife warden Thoubal Moiranthem Open Meitei.
In this regard, Range Forest Officer Kakching Naorem Munal Meitei said that owing to prolonged erratic rainfall and frequent wildfires, many wildlife animals and birds have been forced to foray into human settlements.
However, despite the people's efforts to save the wildlife, many unfortunately perished like the deer that died owing to lack of resources and transportation, particularly due to curfew imposed to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
As such, he appealed to all concerned to contact the nearest Forest Office or veterinary doctors in case of such incidents and help save the life of endangered wildlife species of the state.
