Imphal, August 23 2021:
Expressing resentment over deprivation of political rights to people in the eight assembly segments of Thoubal and Jiribam districts, Wangjing-Tentha MLA Paonam Brojen drew attention of the chief minister to pursue the Centre for reserving a candidate for the eight ACs.
Raising the issue during the zero hour of assembly session on Monday, MLA Brojen said that the Election Commission of India had recognised the eight ACs as backward and reserved area.
For the past seven decades, people of these ACs are being deprived of the right to contest election to Lok Sabha though they can cast their votes.
Recently, an MP of Manipur proposed in the parliament to include these eight ACs in general category but it was an erroneous move.
Instead, the MP should raise the demand for a reserved candidate from the eight ACs, he said.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA K Meghachandra contended that failure of the state government to honour the agreement signed with Manipur Secretariat Services Association, Manipur Government Employees' Federation and Pensioners' Union some three years back is the root cause for the.
government employees resorting to cease work strike.
Such agitation amid the Covid-19 pandemic will create inconvenience to the general public, he said, and suggested that the CM look into the matter and resolve the issue at the earliest.
While lauding the role played by ASHA workers during the pandemic, MLA Kh Joykisan urged the government to raise their honorarium with immediate effect in recognition of their contribution in the fight against the pandemic.
He informed the House that monthly honorarium of an ASHA worker is only Rs 2000 .
