Imphal, September 24 2015:
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), in a bid to compete with other private medical centres, conducted its first 'Angioplasty Stenting' procedure on a patient who was admitted to the hospital after a heart attack.
After successfully conducting the procedure on September 21, Cardiologist and Unit Head of Medicine Unit-IV, Department of Medicine, RIMS Prof Dhanaraj Singh Chongtham told The Sangai Express in an exclusive interview that the procedure is the first of its kind at RIMS.
Authorities provided RIMS with the required machinery for a catheterization laboratory at an estimated cost of around Rs 5 to 6 lakh to the department some two months back.

The procedure was conducted on VL Tluanga (55) of Churachandpur who was admitted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack.
He said that the proximal LAD (Left Anterior Descending) artery was almost completely blocked up to 99.9 percent.
"The procedure on Tluanga is one of the toughest and the most challenging cases in my entire career," added Prof Dhanaraj.
Recounting the procedure, he stated that they had to use other forms of technique for the procedure and had to use 3x18 mm standard pipe to remove the blockade developed in the artery after the heart attack.
Later, the medicated best standard 'Giant palmaz stent' was placed in the damaged artery to allow free flow of blood and to prevent the walls of the artery from collapsing further.
Further, he said that RIMS is providing the operation facilities at free of cost and patients have to pay only for the food items during their stay.
He added that such offer allows patients to save more than 50 percent of the total cost as such procedures in private hospitals cost more than Rs 3.5 lakh.
"It is up to the patient's trust and confidence on us or the private hospitals for such tough and difficult procedures," he added.
With the required machinery put in place, in due course of time all other heart related procedures and operations will be well conducted at RIMS, he said.
He added that VL Tluanga was speedily recuperating in RIMS and was discharged today.
