The 19 hours general strike imposed by both groups of the Apunba Lup to protest the killing of one Pheiroijam Bishorjit concluded peacefully today.
Lamphel police reportedly picked up three alleged strike enforcers from Tera Keithel area.
The general strike was called to denounce the alleged custodial killing of the Nongada youth on June 21 by personnel of 19 Assam Rifles.
Barring some women vendors at the Imphal markets selling their wares (vegetables) most commercial activities in the capital city and greater Imphal area came to a standstill during the strike period.
Inter-district transport services also remained off the road for the day as general strike supporters confronted the few commuters who whizzed through the main thoroughfares.
While the valley districts were badly affected by the strike, press sources informed of normal activities in the hill districts even though travellers were inconvenienced due to absence of transport services to and from the district.
Tourist bus operators also cancelled service for the day while flight service continued as usual.
In connection with the agitation womenfolk of Sagolmang area staged sit-in-protest at Sagolmang Bazar in which banners were raised demanding immediate removal of AFSPA and denounced the excesses committed by security force.
The JAC has decided to suspend the Imp-Ukl road bandh for five days starting from tomorrow.
