Imphal, June 23:
With more and more patients being admitted to different health centres including RIMS for diarrhoea, the State Health Department has asked the Indian Council of Medical Research to study which pathogen is responsible for the spread of the disease.
Speaking to The Sangai Express a high ranking official of the State Health Departments said that diarrhoea has affected a large number of people and has taken the proportion of an epidemic.
The Sangai Express had also earlier reported the outbreak of this disease at Senapati and at the adjoining areas of Churachandpur and Chandel.
The source further said that the State Health Department has asked the Indian Council of Medical Research to study the cases and find out which pathogen is responsible for causing the outbreak of diarrhoea.
The decision to rope in the service of the Indian Council of Medical Research was taken during a meeting attended by the Principal Secretary, Health, V Chhiber, Health Director Dr AK Surendra and officials of the Council on Jun 21.The team from the Indian Council of Medical Research will be led by Dr Yaima and the investigation will start from Andro and later cover the other areas.
The team will study and try to find out the pathogen responsible for the outbreak of the disease.
One of the chief factors for the outbreak of the disease is polluted water and the drying up of water sources, explained the source.
One simple but extremely effective preventive measure is to boil the water before consumption.
Medical teams have already been despatched to Andro, Senapati and Saikul to study the outbreak of the disease there, said the source.
Though reports of the outbreak of the diease have been streaming in, there is as yet no official report of anyone succumbing to the disease, added the source.
When this reporter checked the paediatric ward at RIMS, 53 kids were found admitted at the hospital for the disease in the month of June alone.
Out of this one has succumbed to the disease.
