The death toll in flash floods in Goalpara district of Assam today rose to 119 with the recovery of 58 more bodies, police sources said.
Altogether 136 persons have died in the last five days in the State with 17 persons killed in landslides in Guwahati, besides the deaths in flash floods.
Goalpara Superintendent of Police Violet Barua told PTI 91 bodies were recovered from Krishnai and the rest from Agia and Dudhnoi areas.
The district was struck by flash floods during the wee hours on Saturday last.
Round the clock rescue operations were on by the police and army and there was possibility of more bodies being recovered, Barua said.
She said 55 relief camps have been opened so far for more than 20,000 people affected by the flash floods and they are being provided with food and medical aid.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was scheduled to survey the affected areas tomorrow, she added.
Carcasses of countless cattle heads were found floating around.
Vast areas of human habitation have been washed away.
Croplands have been damaged and trees uprooted.
Rainfalls all over the State have snapped surface communication between Upper and Lower Assam, affected train services and caused floods in several districts.
