Imphal, February 08 2015:
A public meeting on the topic 'Crime against Women' was jointly organised by All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association, AMAWOVA, and United Clubs, IMC Ward No.4, at Shri Shri Madan Mohonji Mandap, Uripok Sorbon Thingel on Sunday.
Treasurer of the club, T Dilip drew a comparison on the wide differences between the amount of respectability accorded to Manipuri women in the past and the proliferation of gross violence against them in the present time.
In his opinion, the adverse trend against women observed today can be reversed by improving the law and order situation and handing out equal treatment to both men and women.
The overall rise in crimes against women is an all India phenomenon, but the rate of awarding punishment to the perpetrators is abysmal in Manipur, remarked Professor Chinglen Meisnam.
Chinglen expressed shock at the low capability of administration and law and order enforcement shown by the government.
On the basis of the widespread violence reported in various newspapers, it is apparent that there is no governance in the land, he stated.
The numbers of law breakers have reached unprecedented level, he stated and linked the explosion in crimes to the prevalence of rampant corruption.
Representation of women in bad light in films, shumang leela etc will induce people to disrespect them more, he noted and reminded that such acts classified as gender bias are punishable.
Convener of United Club, IMC Ward No.4, Kh Tarunkumar was the president of the function while president of AMAWOVA Kunjarani and president of Tourangbam Leikai Welfare Organisation Y Ibeni were the guests of honour.
