Imphal, February 08 2015:
A one-day public discussion programme on the theme 'Crime against women' was held today at Shri Shri Madan Mohanjit Mandap, Uripok Sorbon Thingel under the aegis of All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) and United Clubs, IMC Ward No.4, Uripok.
The discussion programme was presided by Poirei Leimaron Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur president L Memchoubi, United Clubs convenor Advocate Kh Tarunkumar, AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani and MU Economics department Assistant Professor Chinglen Maisnam as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
The presidium members were of the opinion that the use of abusive words or picturing violence upon women in modern films and dramas adversely affect the societal attitude towards women.
These, they agreed are one of the factors that promote crimes against women.
The members further advocated equal treatment of women with the male counterparts.
A society can hope to develop only when equal rights are awarded to the women like men, the members added.
Regarding the stereotyping of women as the weaker sex, the women vendors at Khwairamband Keithel are proof enough to showcase the strength of women, the members added.
Even though there is vast disparity between men and women, the State Government has shown little interest to introduce gender budget in the State, Professor Chinglen Maisnam stated.
AMAWOVA president Kunjarani during her speech said, "Women aren't dolls.
Every women must acknowledge this" .
In order to bring a change in the attitude of the society, she added, the first main thing to achieve is to instill the idea in every women that they are not the 'weaker being' and they must protect themselves from being treated as one in society.
