Imphal, July 01 2013:
A 5-day long Fish Farmers' Training Programme organized by District Fishery Office, Imphal East under Rashtriya Kendra Vikash Yojna scheme commenced from today at the training hall of State Institute of Rural Development today.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, K Saratkumar, Director of Fisheries, Government of Manipur, stated that the yearly requirement of fish in the State is roughly around 40,000 metric tonnes.
However, the production of fishes in the State is only 25,000 metric tonnes.
So, the production of fish in the State is very low.
Though the production capacity in the valley is high, it is very low in the hill areas of the State.
Various factors including, soil, climate and others relating to fish feeds are the reasons behind poor production of fishes in Manipur as compared to other States.
However, with use of new scientific technologies and proper training to the fish farmers, production of fish in the State can be increased to a considerable level.
Presided over by Kh Memcha Devi, Additional Director of Fisheries, the inaugural function of the training programme was also attended by David K Shimray, Joint Director of Fisheries as Guest of Honour.
