Kakching, August 23 2021:
Farmers of Lang-meidong Mamang Leikai under Hiyanglam assembly constituency on Sunday protested at Langmeidong Laimanai Naya Bazar demanding availability of urea.
One of the farmers at the protest Elangbam Muhindro stated that at a time when there is need of urea for applying in the held, it has not been made available.
Though the government is providing urea at low cost it is not being distributed properly, he alleged.
Muhindro said many farmers bought urea from market at the cost of Rs 850 to Rs 1500 per bag for initial application to save their crops, but if the government cannot provide the fertiliser for the second phase of application, it will definitely lead crop failure.
He further demanded that authority concerned provide urea for the farmers of Hiyanglam AC in 4-5 days to ensure timely application.
Langmeidong Gram Panchayat Ward No 1 former member Thokchom Bilat Meitei said that farmers are facing huge issues in getting the urea.
Initially, Agriculture Department distributed urea at the godown at Kakching Lamdong, but in spite several visits they could not get the fertiliser.
Later, urea was distributed at DC Kakching, but there too due to limited number of bags, they could not receive the urea.
Following this, the local MLA also distributed urea at government fixed rate but they could not get it as they were told that the urea is only for earlier listed farmers.
He continued that earlier if urea was of limited amount, then it was made available to farmers by lottery but now only people with connection are getting them, which is very unfortunate.
As such, he appealed to the authorities concerned to provide urea to farmers of Hiyanglam AC at the earliest without any discrimination.
