Imphal, July 10 2021:
Social activist turned politician Johnson Elangbam has drawn the attention of authority concerned towards the need for checking the expenditure of some of the intending candidates of Keishamthong assembly constituency and investigate their income.
In a virtual press conference on Saturday, Johnson said that there are around 200 containment areas in Keishamthong AC and around 50 Covid patients have died.
It is a must to join hands and contribute in making a Covid free Keishamthong.
Unfortunately, some individuals are indulging in politics while extending helping hands to the crisis hit people, he said.
It is unfortunate that some intending candidates are deploying a team of 20 to 30 people to extend helping hands to the people while violating Covid relevant SOPs.
It seems that they are putting behind the pandemic and its impact as the secondary concern.
It would be better if they would bring forth the pandemic as the primary issue and leave aside election motives for the time being.
Some intending candidates are spending huge amount of money in the relief operation to the extent that even the CM or the PM could not afford, he said, and opined that allowing continuation of such activities would prove disastrous for the state and the society.
He then urged the government authority to look into the income of the intending candidates and assess if they match with their expenditure.
He also urged the vigilance department or enforcement directorate to monitor their spending so that the trend of spending huge sum of money in elections does not affect the people at the grassroots level.
Terming such activities as the root cause of corruption, he appealed to the people of Keishamthong AC to stay away from such corrupt practices.
