Thoubal, June 22 2021:
With the expansion and repairing of the Imphal-Moreh section of Asian Highway (National Highway 102), the size of Thoubal canal located to the south of Thoubal police station has shrunk and blocked all routes of draining the access water from the farm lands.
As a consequence, vast tracts of farm lands near Thoubal police station have been flooded.
In addition to flooding around 100 paris of farm lands, nearby houses and office campuses including District Transport Office, District Cooperative Society and Thoubal Police Station have inundated due to shrinking of the said canal as a consequence of the national highway expansion project.
Speaking to media persons in this regard, Okram Kuber, owner of a flooded farm land, recalled that a written application urging for repairing the culvert of Thoubal canal was submitted to deputy commissioner Thoubal, National Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and GR Infra Structure Private Limited four-five months back.
Despite the assurance of fulfilling the demands within a week by the authorities, they have failed to repair both the culvert and the siphon till now, he contended.
Expressing concern that the artificial flooding of the farm lands will stymie the crop production, Kuber urged authorities concerned to look into the matter and construct a culvert so as to mitigate the inconveniences being faced by the farmers.
