Training on scientific cultivation of tuber crops held

A one-day 'training programme on scientific cultivation of tuber crops' was held at Mayang Imphal in Imphal West district on Wednesday.
Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, who attended the programme as chief guest, inaugurated the training programme which was organized jointly by All India Coordinated Research Project on Tuber Crops and Central Agricultural University, Imphal.
Dr JM Laishram, Dean, College of Agriculture at CAU, Imphal attended the opening ceremony of the programme as president while Prof W Ingo Meitei, Head, Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture at CAU, Imphal as guest of honour.
Dr AK Bijaya Devi, PI, AICRP (TC), CAU, Imphal Centre, in her key note address, said tuber crops locally known as Mangra and Haa are rich in carbohydrate and they also have great medicinal values.
She pointed out that these tuber crops are wholesome food items and minimum energy is required in cultivating these crops.
Dr Bijaya said earning income through growing tuber crops is very easy in an agrarian State like Manipur, and explained that the Government has been taking up different projects for promoting tuber crops cultivation in the State.
She further informed that farmers can come to CAU, Imphal and take tuber crop seeds.
During the training programme, Prof W.Ingo spoke on the topic "Role of Tuber Crops in Food Security," Dr AK.

Ibohal on "Insect Pest and Diseases Management of Tuber Crops" and Dr Th.Ranadhir on "Role of Tuber Crops in Successful Management of Piggery" .
