Imphal, July 30 2014:
Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing informed Manipur legislative assembly on Monday that seven Government doctors have been booked on the charges of practicing both in Government and private hospitals and among them one has been kept under suspension.
Tonsing said this while replying to a calling attention motion moved by opposition MLA L Ibomcha in the House.
The minister further said the Government is paying non-practicing allowances to all the Government doctors, but complaints have been constantly received by the Government that many of these doctors are practicing in private hospitals too.
He said that the Government has started taking up action against such doctors and informed that seven Government doctors have been booked on the charges of practicing in private clinics.
Among them, one has been suspended, Tonsing added without disclosing the names of the doctors.
The Minister said the state Government has been exerting efforts to ban all illegal private clinics and laboratories in the state.
Keishamthong legislator Ibomcha alleged that many Government doctors are illegally working with private clinics and referring patients to these clinics and earning extra huge money.
He said private hospitals and labs are mushrooming in the state without a break making the public spending a lot of money in healthcare.
Ibomcha urged the Health minister to look into the matter.
