Opposition parties continue protest

Imphal, September 29 2021: Eleven opposition parties of the state continued their protest against the BJP government's policy while alleging the government of suppressing the ideologies of democracy, secularism and rights to freedom of expression.

On Wednesday, the opposition parties organised sit-in protest at Uyumpok Maning Leikai community hall in Khundrakpam assembly constituency with leaders and representatives of different opposition parties such as AIFB, AITC, BSP, CPI-M, INC, JDS, MPP, NCP, PRJA and RSP attending it.

Speaking at the protest, Congress MLA Th Lokeshwar accused the Biren government of failing to keep its promises made on the floor of the state legislative assembly.

Chief Minister N Biren is imitating the same policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the state which leads to failure of the government.

Democracy is in a grave state as people who raise question out of hunger could possibly land in jail under the present regime.

Considering how the BJP government is violating democracy and secularism, it is time for the public to join hands for installation of a government which would uphold secularism in the state and the country as well, he said.

On the other hand, he said, the state is descending into lawlessness with the government unable to do anything against some individuals.

The recent brutal murder of Athuan Abonmei after being abducted from a programme venue to be attended by the chief minister in front of security personnel is a solid example of the inability of the government.

The incident was a shocking episode in the history of the state and it is time the public, CSOs and women leaders raise their voice against the incapable BJP government, he said.

CPI-M leader Sarat Salam termed BJP as a party formed by people who worked in favour of the then British empire.

Those leaders subscribed to the idea of two-nation theory for Hindus and Muslims, which led to the partition of India and Pakistan.

The nationwide protest by opposition parties is akin to a second movement to save the country and the state from the BJP and to bring about a government which would uphold democracy and secularism, he added.
