Imphal, December 03 2014 :
The Manipur People's Party has, in a statement issued by its publicity general secretary, strongly condemned the Cabinet's decision to extend the 'disturbed area' status of the State for another one year while stating that the Cabinet's decision is against the will of the people.
The 'disturbed area' status was earlier imposed on the State to counter insurgents in the State.
However, the statement said, the State has only witnessed increasing number of insurgents and violence upon people by the law enforcers.
Expressing strong disappointment on the working of the ruling Government, the MPP added that the Act has been decried by the public since its imposition.
Irom Sharmila has been fighting for fourteen long years demanding repeal of AFSPA from the State.
Even the Jeevan Reddy Commission had recommended the repeal of the Act from the State.
The MPP further accused both the State and Central forces of indulging in illegal drug smuggling under the cover of the Act.
Regarding the din over the establishment of a Sports University at 44 Yaithibi Loukol, the MPP has appealed to the State Government to establish the University at Koutrok instead.
