Locals object eviction drive

Imphal, December 03 2014 : A tense situation ensued as a large number of locals objected to eviction of houses at Lei Ingkhol, behind the complex of High Court of Manipur under Lamphel police station today.

The incident occured when a team of Government officials accompanied by a Magistrate and a police team led by SDPO Lamphel reached the area at around 7 am to evict the houses following an order issued on November 26 last by SDO the officials, from moving inside Tolen's residential complex.

However, amidst chaos and tension, police pushed back the locals and brought the excavator inside Tolen's residential complex and started dismantling the house.

In the meantime, a dramatic incident unfolded as a local, identified as Leikham Bhogen poured kerosene on his body and threatened to immolate himself if the eviction drive continues.

With the situation becoming more tense with Bhogen's move, the officials gave the affected families time to remove their belongings by tomorrow morning.

Member of an affected family said that although the Government has provided land at Lamlongei, it is inconvenient to shift there immediately in this chilly weather as they are yet to complete construction of their new houses.

As such, the Government has been requested to wait till the completion of construction of houses at Lamlongei, she added.

On the other hand, a Government order issued by SDO Porompat on June 27,2013 mentioned that the Court of SDO had served a notice to the respondents/encroachers to show cause as to why they should not be evicted from Dag numbers 515, 520, 527, 530 and 531 within the revenue village number 8 Mantripukhri, Imphal East Tahsil and to produce any relevant documents if any on July 1, 2013 .

The Government order further said that as the respondents/ encroachers neither appeared before the Court nor submitted any document, the land has been allotted to the Registrar, Gauhati High Court, Imphal Bench (now High Court of Manipur).

The said order also directed the authority concerned to remove the structures/constructions from the said area by 7 am of December 3, 2014 .
