Synchronising with the 120th birth anniversary of Prof SR Ranganathan, the Father of Library Movement in India, Library Day Celebration-2012 cum Ranganathan Memorial Lecture was jointly organised by Manipur Library Association (MALA) and State Central Library, Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur at the State Central Library here yesterday.
The function was graced by noted literary figure Nongthongbam Kunjamohon as Chief Guest; Prof Amar Yumnam, Dean of School of Social Sciences, Manipur University as President and S Tampakleima, Chief Librarian, Imphal, Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur as Guest of Honour.
Saratchand Thiyam, Sahitya Akademy Awardee was the invited Speaker for the Ranganathan Memorial Lecture.
Speaking on the occasion, Nongthongbam Kunjamohon said that we cannot just put away the work for developing the Manipuri language to the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad alone.
As most of the population of the state read daily newspapers published in the state, they equally play a major role in the development of Manipuri language.
He further stated that Library certainly plays a decisive role in the development of the human society.
There is the need to establish a library in every educational institution of the state.
The importance of library should be made known to the people in general and the student community in particular.
Delivering the Presidential speech, Amar Yumnam said that earlier people used to gain a lot of knowledge from the books available in the library.
But now, with advancement in science and technology, people, particularly the students give no time to go to the library.
Instead, they opt for the internet where they can find whatever they want at the click of a button.
Under such situation, we all need to strengthen the library movement.
Library will serve to be a great tool in solving the present problems of the society.
People should take the required initiative to strengthen the library movement and not leave the entire job to the Manipur library Association.
A book entitled "Manipurgi Itihasta Mayengbam Anandamohan" written by N Inaocha Singh was also released on the occasion.
Floral tributes were offered to the photo of Prof SR Ranganathan as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
